I'll be buying my new filter tomorrw and ordering plants soon. What plants should I stay away from if I don't want them overtaking the tank or at least be prepared to do alot of pruning?

All stem plants are fast growing and usually require pruning/trimming every two weeks, frequently every week. The more light and nutrients you provide, the faster they will grow (up to a point obviously).

Floating plants also tend to grow faster because they are closer to the light and can assimilate CO2 directly from the air; but floating plants are easy to reduce, just take some out.

Substrate-rooted plants (swords, crypts, vallisneria, sagittaria, aponogeton...) tend to stay as you plant them. Maintenance usually means removing the odd leaf that yellows. Those with runners though can take off quickly, but pulling up runners is not too much work.

Plants that root on wood or rock (Java Fern, Anubias) are slow growing and require minimal maintenance.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
