Question Upgrading and planting...gravel or sand?

OK, so I have a 24 litre tank set up and this has put me on for 5-6 months, however the offer comes of a bigger tank and I jump. Going from 24litres to 60litres, moving everything from the smaller tank to the larger tank(2 Glowlights, 2 Penguin Tetras, 4 Male Guppies - I still don't know if I want to move the MTS I have across :/).

Not going to have enough substrate to transfer over so I'm looking to get something new. I currently have small colour-puke blue-green gravel but I think I might want to try sand.

I LOVE the look of sand, and yes I've heard its a git to clean but I'm good with putting a few hours into it, however I've heard that some plant struggle with it, so I was looking for some advice on my substrate, gravel or sand, considering planting (hence in the planting section), and any suggestions on first plants. Complete noob at planting so chuck at me what you like!

Thanks :D

If I had to choose between gravel or sand, I'd go finer gravel or coarser sand...

I'm pretty sure (correct me if I am wrong) that some plants struggle in sand because after a while it compacts and chokes them. A malaysian trumpet snail would go a long way in aerating the sand and keeping it from compacting...

I believe sand works just fine~ :) I'm not a big fan of the regular sand but I've seen many really nice heavily planted tanks using it as the primary substrate

Great, thanks guys!! I think I will definitely go with sand, especially if you say the MTS will help rid the problems....and thanks for linking your guide Mitch, it will be very helpful no doubt! :D
