How do I properly trim water wisteria? I have a Wisteria forest growing in my tank and It's gotten so tall that it's crowding out my floating plants. So how do I trim it?

Do I trim the top off or the bottom? I've looked online and it says conflicting things. I also heard that you can't trim it with scissors. True?

I think this is mentioned in our profile of this plant; click on the shaded name in posts to see the profile of that plant or fish species, or use the second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top to go to the profiles section. But regardless, like most stem plants it will continue to grow unless pruned regularly, before or when it reaches the surface. As the top part is the nicest, pull up the stem, cut it where you want it, and stick the top cut portion in the substrate and chuck out the lower portions (which will usually be losing leaves anyway due to less light reaching it). This may have to be done weekly, or bi-weekly, depending upon growing conditions in your tank.

If you want to propogate the plant, you can also 'plant' the bottom portion, which will grow into it's own plant.

(Plant the 'top' in front of the bottom, and you won't see the bare stem. :P )

I use scissors...
