I've never really been interested in live plants. I always thought that silk ones were just easier. Now that I'm getting more serious about aquariums (I just upgraded from a 29gal to a 75) I'm learning more about the benefits of planted tanks.
I'm not sure that I want to totally switch over, but I would like to add a couple of live plants and see where it goes.:)
What are some easy to care for beginner plants? I need them to be fairly common because I live in a small town and the only place to buy live plants would be Walmart or the Petco an hour away. I don't think they stock much exotics.;)
My substrate is black gravel. It's the bigger gravel, not the more common little stuff but bigger smoother "pebbles". My lighting is a flourescent strip light that came with the tank. It's 40 watts. It would be great if I didn't have to change anything, but I'll understand.
What about floating plants? Do they just float on the surface? That might be kind of neat.
Ok, this probably sounds silly to all of you "plant people" but one of the main reasons I'm thinking about plants is because I'm getting a severum and I think it would be cute to watch him nibble on the plants. Like a natural snack.:) Is that dumb?
*edited to add* Ok, I did some reading and it's looking hopeless for my puny 40 watts and my gravel.
