t5 ho fixture brackets

just curious... i am looking into getting some lighting to start a planted tank.
i am seeing that a good number of these have brackets on the sides for mounting to the tank rim.
so, do these type of lights require mounting to the tank or can they be lying on the tank without the brackets? in addition, does t5 ho lighting require the glass tops to be removed?
i know the tops will deter some light from the plants, but how much does it matter if at all.
reason for asking about the brackets is that i am looking at possibly getting 2 36" fixtures. i would not be able to mount them at the center point of my tank. so do they just lay on top with no glass lids under them?

Iv got 2 x 48" t5 twin setups, there is no glass under them and have not had a problem with them in this setup. On the other hand i wouldn't recommend this and im looking for a solution

I have a T5 HO 36" fixture by AquaticLife. Those fixtures are not designed to sit directly on top of your tank. I find that the brackets that came with it are sufficient and are not mounted to your tank. They are adjustable and simply set right on the tank. Pretty securely too. Of course, for extra money, you can get the ceiling mounts and hang it above your tank if you prefer. It does not require removal of the lid. Unless it is not an all glass lid and is the hood kind. Hoods are the ones that come with kits that are plastic. I use an all glass lid. This is to prevent dust and debris getting into the tank and decreases the risk of jumpers.
