Your old hood can run spiral compact fluorescent lights (energy saver bulbs) just fine. Its no different then the new one really. Just has the potential to run more watts then the new one you bought. The fluorescent bulbs for the old hood would also be cheaper then the T8's too.

I agree with Mikaila, which is what I was suggesting previously. The compact fluorescent (screw-in) bulbs "daylight" with a kelvin of 6500K are very good plant light, and good colour rendition. Two 10w bulbs will suffice. If you can return the fluorescent tube fixture, you'll have more money for fish.

Yes I returned the other 40$ hood and light for 2 12$ florescent bulbs
