Only one of my tanks even has a proper "hood"

the other two are open topped-
one has a CFL spotlight over it and the other is the desk lamp I mentioned.

Also, you could always find a normal lamp (the kind with a lampshade) that fits your style and put it beside the tank...
pop a 23W cool white CFL in it and put it on a timer. :)

Only drawback would be the whole room will be lit up when the aquarium is on.
