I've never timed it, but give it a few weeks to become thoroughly rooted on the wood. You do need to ensure it is firmly attached yourself first, or it tends to float off easily. Black cotton thread works, you can't really see it and it can be cut off later (or it will disintegrate in time). The roots of any of these type of plants grow quite firmly into wood and even onto rock. B.

Ahh, I had the same question. I'm not putting driftwood in my 5g tank. Can it just be tied to a small rock?

For the Java moss, what works best I found and makes it attach the quickest and then spread: Piece of window screen and the moss "sowed" on to it with regular black sowing yarn. Nice thing about it is, you can cut the screen to any which size you like and even create "walls" on the back your tank (Like in my New shrimp farm with the black sand).

For the Java Fern, I had found they root down quicker on the driftwood then the rocks (maybe because of the surface differences DW being more naturally shaped).

As for timing I'd say on the Java moss 2 weeks max. The Fern's take longer.
