substrate?

I bought a 14 gallon biocube about 4 months ago. I mixed silicone sand with some gravel. Is this good substrate for a planted aquarium?

Also depends on the material. Some sands and gravels are calcareous (composed of calcium-type rock) and will raise hardness and pH which may or may not be suitable depending upon the fish and plants.

The sand, being smaller grains, will sink to the bottom, leaving the larger gravel on top. This is fine from the plants perspective.

Silicone sand is made from silica, and high silica can cause diatoms (brown algae). Just a caution.
