It gets easier as you go. Once you learn what the plants need to survive and thrive its pretty simple. After having bought 2 plants that were suppose to be fully aquatic (the ribbon plant and mondo grass) I start researching the plant and what it needed before I bought it. If I couldn't find the profile here (TFK) I would surf the internet till I could. Once you get your light replaced you should be able to grow most moderate light plants. Wisteria may still be a problem for you though. With a little trial and error plus with the advise of people on here you will get it.

Thanks for the encouragement. I need it! I'm just disappointed right now because the smell of rotting plants is stuck in my nose. I purchased the ribbon on a whim, but I know it'll look good in my kitchen window :) Next time I'll know better.

As far as the rooting smell goes. If it was me. I would take all the plants out that look like they were dieing. Get any big pieces of debris out. I would as spihon the gravel along with a water change like 50%. That should help I would think.
