I use pool filter sand bought at a pool suppy shop 50lbs for about $12. It is a courser sand and my low light plants are doing all fine in the sand. It just is a pain to rinse it out by the 5 gal. bucket full but worth the look. I have black sand I bought a a local fish store 20lbs for about $20. You can add eco-complete on the bottom then the black sand on top if you like as plants like eco-complete. Picture below is pool filter sand

redchigh, where do you buy that sand? I'm also looking for sand but the place i normally order from is out of their black sand. Also is your sand painted? if its painted the paint might be trapping in the chemicals if it rubs off it might release things into your water.
