I think the sponge in my filter picked up pretty much all of the root tab gunk since it turned the water very dark when I was cleaning it. (in old tank water of course! ;D)
I had good success with Nutrafin Plant-Gro sticks. They last a year, and from observing the growth of my large swords I think that is accurate. And by comparison to Flourish tabs that have to be replaced every 2-3 months, the cost is significantly less for the sticks.
