I have a few aponogeton bulbs (relatively fresh) and being vary of dropping them into my tank, I put them in a bowl on my windowsill where they get some sunlight. The problem is, after a few weeks nothing sprouted except red hair algae or what looks like it. The algae seems to only attack two larger bulbs.
What should I do now? It's obvious the bulbs won't sprout in the unfiltered cold bowl and they need to be in the tank. But I am very reluctant to introduce any trace of the hair algae to my tank. So do I sanitize the bulbs in bleach or peroxide first? Should I perhaps drop them in a quarantine tank for a few weeks? I really hate to do that as well because I plan on housing some newly bought fish there and don't want any additional bacteria from rotting bulbs that may leech into the tank. What would you do?
Again, smaller bulbs appear to be fine, but the algae spores must still be on them because they were in the same bowl with the big ones. I am honestly inclined to just toss them out, but I really really want some fast growing aponogetons in my tank. Any input is appreciated, guys.
