Questions with Lighting

I have a 10g lightly planted freshwater tank.

I purchased a "low- profile" led hood for it from wal-mart and was wondering if this light setup would be sufficient for plants to grow. I have been scouring these forums today with regards to lighting and am eager to learn about lighting for a planted tank.

I know absolutely nothing about LEDs. I know a memeber here (JDM) messing with them. Maybe you can message him about them. I do know you should be able to at least grow low light plants such as Java Ferns, Java Moss, and Anubias.

Ohh btw Welcome to Tropical Fish keeping!

What plants are you looking to grow? Unfortunately the LED lights offered by Walmart (and most chain pet stores) aren't strong enough to support any but the lowest light demanding plants (java fern, java moss, anubias).

For a cheap alternative (and one I have successfully been using) is to use clip on desk lamps, with 6500k spiral CFLs. I use one on my ten gallon (clipped to the side and aimed to light the whole tank), but you could even use two clipped onto either the back, or both sides.

I have planted Anubias, Lace Java Fern, Dwarf Hairgrass and Dwarf Baby-tears. I noticed that the Anubias has been thriving, The Lace is fairing well but the ground cover plants are not doing so well.

This tank only has two inhabitants, rather small to the tank(Betta & African Dwarf-frog) I am considering the possibility of there not being enough food for the plants so I am looking into that now as well.
