any substrate will work. you dont have to change your gravel

you can even tie java's to the sides of rocks or drift wood and they'r attachthemselves after a fer months

Only bury the root part way into the gravel. Java ferns do best when tied gently to a piece of driftwood until the root themselves onto it.
