Pond plants?

Is it possible to keep pond plants in the home aquarium? I don't have a hood on my tank and my lights are 6" off the water. I wanted to add some pond lilies for some color. Anyone have experience with this?

unless your tank is over 200 gallons, even a small 'pond' water lily will outgrow the tank and shade out all the other plants in the tank. They sell dwarf water lilies especially for aquariums and stay moderately small. I have one in a 10 gallon, but it would really look much better in a 20 or larger.

I have a dwarf tiger lotus in mine. The leaves get 2-3" or so in diameter.

But some pond plants can, yes, but be careful on the size as mentioned. Like Duckweed is a pond plant, but is very small.

Another one to watch out for is Water Lettuce can get huge, but Dwarf Water Lettuce is fine in the aquarium.

Oh, there's tons of 'pond plants' that do really well, but the list is a bit too long to list. One of my favorites is 'Creeping Jenny', which floats on and grows on the banks of ponds, but easily adjusts to life submerged in an aquarium.

Thanks! I'll have to try looking for the dwarf lilies then!
