Not hard to keep, just as long as you get the right plants for your setup. For example, don't buy high light, high maintenance plants for a normal, off the shelf, tank setup with less than 2 watts per gallon of lights and expect them to thrive.

If you don't have the money, then you can select low tech plants (No CO2 and lights under 2wpg). Unfortunately, most of the low tech plants are slow growing, but will thrive with just off the shelf lights as water changes and fish waste to survive.

They really aren't difficult to keep once you get them going and find the right ones. What is your current lighting? The standard hood will grow a lot of different plants but they will grow slowly.

Anubias, crypts, java fern, java moss, elodea, and many others will work for very low light but will grow excrutiatingly slow.

Just let us know what size tank you have and what lighitng and we can go from there.
