Planting new Vallisneria.

Hello everyone!

Tomorrow I will be planting some new Vallisneria Spiralis in my tank.
The first time I planted them, all of the old growth melted away very quickly and new growth came up.

I was just wondering if there was a way to avoid all that melting mess.
Since the old growth is going to most likely die anyway, should I just cut the valls short before planting them? Or, should I remove the dying parts one by one as they happen?

I had Jungle Vallisneria and they seemed to do the same thing. Even if it was me pulling them out of my tank and letting them float in a tote of tank water while I was rearranging my tank. I would just remove the dieing parts as I saw them.

I would plant them as they are; remove any dead or yellowing/browning leaves, but leave the green leaves intact. Then as Boredomb said, remove dying leaves when you see them, I usually find the water change a good time for plant pruning.

I don't know how similar these are to giant vallisneria , my GV didn't die off at all but I planted them really shallow, roots actually show above the sand.
