I have a question for you guys and girls at the forum. For some reason at the pet stores it is unknown or they don't say whether you can or can't! This is in reference to the lead weight ring that is attached to keep stem plants intact. I have had nothing but bad luck in stem plants rooting in the gravel. It will hold for a few days, then one day just floating.
My idea is why can't I just plant the plants (that's held together by the small lead ring at the pet shop). It holds well in the gravel...! Is the ring harmful to the fish? Like I said I can't get a straight answer. I have called the big chains; Petco, Petsaver and numerous others.
Definitely remove the lead strip, and any other thing for that matter (rubber bands are sometimes used, string, wire...). Stem plants can be placed deep in the gravel and unless you have fish that root up plants, they will stay there. What type of gravel (size of grains) do you have? The larger the grain size, the less it will hold plant roots.
when i get stem plants they usually have short roots and that lead strip. I take the strip off and float them until the roots get longer. Then i plant them.
