Water Sprite is probably the best floating ploant for an aquarium. The leaves will spread across the water surface, and the very large mass of fine roots will extend down into the tank for several inches. This is part of its value. Fish love to browse through that mass of dnagling roots, picking off microscopic plankton as food. Fry will hide in this root mass. And the amount of oxygen released into the water by those roots is incredible. Plus, they take up nutrients including copious amounts of ammonia/ammonium.
I suspect your previous idea of "floating plants" may be something like duckweed. This is fine as far as it goes, but the deeper the floating plant the better.
Most of my tanks have floating Water Sprite.
