A quick Q. Would regular plants, not flower but regular mini tropical plants, survive if placed underwater? If not would placing their roots underwater harm the water and/or kill the plant off?

Well almost every species of aquatic plant can be grown emersed which means only the roots or rhizome are under water. As for terestrial plants growing under water, you never know until you try but I would NOT try this in a tank with fish. A very large number of plants will grow with their roots in water but again only through trial and error will you know for sure.

There is somewhat of a move to find new terrestrials that will grow emersed but it is still so new I have not been able to find any comprehensive lists of plants that will adapt.

Just to make sure, please do NOT try this in a tank with fish in it. Use a bucket outside or a spare aquarium or anything but a tank with fish in it as the fish would not appreciate a heap of rotting plant matter in the water. I suppose it could be done with fish but I would recommend against it.

thanks. i had placed them behind the tank lid to keep them from making a mess anywhere else and they looked so awesome there so i have planted them in somewhat flat and long pots and now it looks awesome. ill try to get a pic of it later.
