The taller leaves are blocking out light to the bottom leaves which kills them and they die off. Just pluck them off or cut the stem to healthy stem point and replant; it's normal.

and the stems that have broken loose, and are laying on the surface of the water stretched out ?, the older leaves are turning red. ... it's not the leaves that are blocked out from enough light.

What temp is it kept at? Most of the Egeria densa available prefers 'cooler water' and will just melt if it is too warm. There is a Brazilian variant that prefers warmer water but it would appear (from your description) that it is melting due to the temp.

80F for temp

i'm not very familiar with the "melting" you talk of.

i do know first the leaves are turning a very distinct red, starting at the tips & edges till the whole leave is red, ... longest stretch of leaves is about 4" long, ... from newest growth to oldest leaves.

Unless you have the warmer water variety then it is definitely going to melt which is characterized by the leaves changing colour and the stems breaking, in time it will start to disappear.

This doesn't sound like Anacharis but more like a Rotala species. Can you get pictures?
