My chameleon plants are being ravaged

I recently got my clown loaches moved into this aquarium from my other one. Before, the loaches didn't live with any live plants. Now they're with three species. Two of them are fine, but the chameleon plants (Houttuynia cordata) are being chewed to smithereens. I guess those just taste better.

I know it's the loaches, I've seen them.
I'm not sure if I sparked their taste for veggies when I anchored a piece of asparagus to the bottom, or if they just happened to discover the plants. They've been in the water about 3 or 4 days and I put the asparagus in shortly after they moved in. (but removed it so they wouldn't eat and subsequently poop too much.)

At any rate.
Is there any hope for these plants? Are there any tricks to keep fish away from them?
