marble queen and giant melon sword?

just curious if anyone has experience with these, picked them up the other day. the marble is in amazing shape and easily 24" tall. the melon is about 20" tall but only has about 5 leafs on it. im assumoing the marble is the same growth rate and reqs as a normal sword. but im not sure about the melon sword, they were both on sale at the LFS and the melon resembles why.

root tabs and liquid fert are being used, the between the melon sword and my amazon and marble queen they are getting the majority of the light, should I be concerned with algae on these plants? how fast of a grower is melon sword?

I can't remember if I have or haven't tried these two varieties of Echinodorus, but in my experience all the larger species are similar in requirements and growth. The root tabs will certainly benefit, as Echinodorus are heavy root feeders, and the liquid fertilizer is also essential for their leaf uptake of nutrients.

Algae issues are the same for any species.

I have experience with the marble. My advice is based on what not to do. It didn't like my gravel substrate, I wasn't using root tabs, and my light duration was too long and they developed algae. They melted and were covered with algae. Since I have switched them to tanks with sand substrate and started using root tabs, they are making a recovery. They lost the marble effect and are just light green right now. We'll see.

ill keep that in mind, the algae factor is what im worried about with my lights. I use root tabs but have gravel and that's not gunna change anytime soon, not until summer atleast.

I just poured some play sand over the substrate around some of my heavy root feeders that I didn't move and it made a big difference. Might be a temporary thing to try.

but the roots would still be in the gravel... how would sand above them effect anything?

guess I never thought of that :P

so when I decide to switch to sand I wont nessicarly have to remove my blue tacky stuff but I could just put sand over it? that way im not losing all of my dissolving organics?
