The only way I can think of that you can make it work would be to make sure that the upper half stays above water. I have seen pictures of it growing in a lot of water with a lot of roots but only 3-4 inches of the stem was under water. I have never tried this in a fish tank as the ones I had didn't live long in their planter and I can't keep them alive outside of a tank.
Call me crazy but I have seen a large crop of these bad boys living in a tank at Petco for months... I do believe that the tops are above water but there is a good 6-10in below the water...
Well I would give them a try then, I might even get some and try them in my tanks since they work that well. Just watch to see that the roots are growing well and make sure to remove any rotting stems and you should be fine if they do grow.
lucky bamboo isnt bamboo(bamboo is a grass) its a dracena species and is toxic if eaten there are plenty of plants that grown half in/out of water if thats what your looking for?
I must contest here. I've had Lucky Bamboo in my 20 gal community tank for several months now doing fine completely submerged. Know, however, that it is not a true aquatic plant. Watch your salt and fluorine levels, and you should be fine. Also be careful if you have any omnivores. My Silver Dollars practically strip the leaves bare. Also, Dracaena sanderiana is not poisonous. At least not to fish. (Otherwise my poor Silver Dollars would have died long ago.) It is however poisonous to cats and dogs if eaten.

I can't vouch for them completely. Two of the three stalks have died off completely. (Mainly because my Silver Dollars ate them down to the roots.) I had a stem break off from one, and it free floated around the tank perfectly fine. My last stalk has been in there for around 4 months now. I'll post a picture later, but you can see that the ends of the blades have been nibbled at, and the stem of one of the leaves is broken, but otherwise, the plant is healthy.
Actualy I have 5 bamboos that i bought from petco. They are totaly submerged and do well. I also have a long bamboo 1 that I got from a plant that was in my house. some of the leaves are in the waters, some are out, but it actualy growing more leaves and roots and does well. Don't be scared to try it out.
I was actually adding "lucky bamboo" too. I love planted tanks, but feel more safe going one plant at a time! It also fools the eye when some plants are real and some are not. Makes it very hard to tell.
I'd love to hear how it goes.
