looking for a floating plant

im looking to purchase a floating plant. i have a 55 gallon with an onion plant. a scarlet temple, a frill plant, a money wart, and 6 water lillies. i have 4 mollies, 2 ruby sharks, one pleco, 1 male betta, one female betta, 1 crab, 1 small algea eater, and 2 angels. the mollies are due to have fry soon and i want lots of hiding places for them but im not sure if i should purchase a floating plant and if so what type should i look for. unfortunatley the only fish store i have that sells plants is petsmart and i didnt see any floaters so it would have to be a common plant that i didnt have to travel to far to get. thanx in advance.

If your tank is open-topped, Pistia stratiotes make excellent additions but will not do well in covered tanks as they will not appreciate the condensation forming on their leaves. I've tried them before in a tank covered with glass and they eventually rot whereas if kept in open-topped conditions, they will thrive well.

Salvinia and riccia are also excellent at providing refuge for the fry. You'd certainly want to avoid duckweeds unless you can keep up with the messy infestations that will also clog filter intakes.

Elodea, water hyacinths, bacopa, duck weed, anachris are just a few that you may try.

ok thanx guys i will deff. look for at least one and i will stay away from the duck weed i hate becoming a slave to my tank though i already am. unfortunetley my tank has to stay cover due to my two cats love to go fishing! plus its always a rude awakening with your aquatic crab is crawling on your dinning room floor with a cat stalking it.

Red Root Floater would work well as well the ones mentioned above. Any plant really can be used as a floating plant and most of them will grow well if not better floating.

I like Pennywort for this. You can let it float or plat it and let it grow to the surface. The surface leaves trail nice long roots (not too long though)

Water Sprite is also really good floating for a fry refuge.

Logic is only the beginning of wisdom

LOL ya id go with the hornwort... grows like a mother in good water conditions and yet isnt demanding. I started with a small 4 in. high bunch
and ended up with a huge mass of it. Perfect for fry!!! :)

Bow down to MTS!!!!!!!!
