Lighting help

My 55-gallon desperately needs a new fluorescent bulb. I bought a 36" tube at Lowe's that says it's a 30-watt bulb with 2175 lumens. It's not specifically designed for aquariums, so I am wondering if I should return it and get a different one. What is the difference, and what type should I choose if I get a new one? It's a standard 55-gallon rectangular tank with a few live plants (I will be getting more). The plants I have right now are low-light lovers. There is only room for one bulb in the hood.

Hope that helps.

You'll want a bulb that is listed in the spectrum of 6,000k to 10,000k to benefit plant growth. 6,700k is just about perfect. Also, the tube will need to be replaced every 6 months or so, as certain colors burn out faster than others.
