Lead weights wrapped around Anacharis??

So what's the deal? When I buy the Anacharis from my LFS it's always rubberbanded and wrapped with lead weight to keep it from floating. I've read some people say remove it, some say it's okay? What's the consensus on the weights? It's really the only thing I've had luck with to keep my plants from floating up. Is it going to hurt them in the long run?

I have 6 pieces of Jave fern in my 75g cichlid tank, all with the original lead on them. Never had a problem, it is personal choice to remove them.

The time it would take to cause any leeching is so slow that in my opinion they can be left on. I know my LFS agree with me and they have a massive 500g planted display tank all with lead weights on, that has been running for 6 years with no ill effects on the fish.

Woke up this mornign and some more Anacharis was floating in my tank. I'm lead weighting them all now. The one bunch I wrapped the lead weight around them, and then I attached one of the small suction cups you can get to secure air line tubing to the weight. I stuck the plant in the gravel and suction cupped it to the tank wall. That baby isn't going anywhere now!:-D
