java moss with no light

I got told that a good way to make bettas not see each other is to put Java moss on the divider. I was wondering if it would work without any light source besides the main room light. I don't have the money to spend on an appropriate cover for my tank and was just going to cut a window screen to fit around the heater and filter until my finances permit me to buy one.

If I do need a light, what wattage would I need for a 10 gallon?

I'm new to both fish and plants so any suggestions would be helpful.

yea, java moss is a really hardy plant. However, without a strong light source u might want to get enough to cover the divider to start with instead of the smaller batches they're sold in and then let it grow out. Also, if you do get a light source, be careful cuz java moss can grow really quickly. If your looking to plant ur 10 gallon with other stuff u will need a light. Depending on what kind of plants u want will determine what kind of lights u need.

To grow java moss, a 10 watt fluorescent should be enough. Most other plants will need more light.
