i received a small amount of java moss. about the amount of a marble if i was to scrunch it all up as tight as possible(not that i have) so i wanna know how long will it take to grow a good amount in a 10 gallon with 10 watts of incandescent light(with rasboras, loaches, and a molly) compared to a 10 gallon with 15 watt fluorescent lights(with a turtle). wanna put it in with my turtle but i fear he will eat it but it would grow much faster. which is best? thanks
I just but a handful of Java Moss from a local lady here in Florida, and she had about 5 10G tanks with low lighting, all full of the stuff. She even had some just floating in jars and vases. There was no filtration in any of her tanks, and the room itself was very dark. But the stuff seemed to grow quite a bit. She said that the only thing that killed it was putting it in straight tap water, so now she always puts it in aquarium water.

I like the way the snails pop between my fingers. It's like a never-ending supply of bubble-wrap!
your best bet with java moss is to get a wide, flat rock- either a slate or a river rock. lay the moss on it thread by thread to cover it evenly one layer thick. Then take a hairnet (like the lunch lady wears), stretch it over the while rock and tie it off on the bottom. If you want, you can then take some fishing line and cross tie it a couple of times to keep the hairnet in place as it decomposes (slowly - mine have lasted more than a year). In pretty short order under 1+ wpg, the moss should cover the rock. It might take a month or 2, but once it gets going your problem will be what to do with it all.
Logic is only the beginning of wisdom
