Question Java Ferns- ok floating?

I have a few java ferns in my tank, and the original two are doing well, having attached themselves to some of the substrate rocks. however, i have a few baby plants from them that have not managed to attach to anything yet, and my pleco keeps knocking them free when i replant them. are they going to have problems if i just let them float for now? or do i need to anchor them down somehow?

I can't see any probloems. They assimilate nutrients from the water via their hair roots, and this will occur floating as well as if they were attached to wood or rock. As they get larger you might want to attach them. Black cotton thread or fishline works well as it is invisible among their black hair roots.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you have any larger rocks or driftwood in the tank you can attach them to these. There are a few methods that people use, cotton thread (which I have used with my anubias) I have also read of others using rubberbands or fishing line. With rubberbands or fishing line you will have to remove them once the plant has attached itself to the object, with the cotton thread it will eventually naturally deterioate.

It's ok to float Java ferns. I do this when I have small planetlets. I attach to driftwood and rocks with fishing line like in the picture I posted. You can see the fishing line in the picture. You can also buy some plant anchor weights at the pet or aquarium store to keep the Java ferns down.
