Java Ferns dying?

I'm trying to get a planted tank started but my java ferns aren't doing so well. The plants are tied to some driftwood.

Here's a pic

Tank info:
Size: 56g
Substrate: Florite
Lighting: .9 wpg Daylight bulbs
Last water test: today
Ammonia: .025
PH: 6.0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 40
no fish yet
Using API Leaf Zone for the plants

Any Ideas?

Well for the plants sake the first thing i would do is remove all the dead or dying leaves. This allow the new growth to get all the nutrients and possibly come back better. It also looks like there is either a nitrogen or iron deficiency. Since you dose Leaf Zone it is likely a nitrogen issue.

Java fern also isn't the best plant to cycle a tank with as broad leaf plants tend to be more delicate in ammonia and cycling conditions. It might just be a matter of time for it to take of when you start to some true nitrates from the cycle.
