You can trim the whole leaf as suggested and it be OK for the plant but not sure I would do that unless it starts looking really bad. Yes if you cut the leaf it will take a long time for it to grow a new one that tall.

But if it's reaching the height of the water, I would be prompted to trim the entire leaf.

If you cut it you need to do so at the very bottom of the stem next to the rhizome.

Yes. That is how I was taught to trim a java fern.

Hmmm

I don't have one but you can use Google to search for an image of one. Just type in rhizome Java fern and you will get some pics of it.

The leaves come out the top of the rhizome (long brown stick looking thing. LoL) and the roots come out the bottom of it if that helps. If you take it out and look close you should be ableto tell.

hey im not sure if someone said anything about the brown spots an stuff on the back side of the leafs. this is actually a new plant starting. the fern puts out these long hairy like fingers an they will eventually attach to whatevers around it and start growing.
