Well, we never know where the wood and rock we buy comes from, or what it may have been exposed to, notwithstanding we assume it is safe from a fish store, but it is not the store's fault as they also don't know the origins. I had an issue with a chunk of wood years ago, killing fish.
I would put it in a pail/container of water if you can and just let it sit for days. Change the water periodically (every couple of days). It may be something that dissipates on its own. Of course, if you don't particularly mind the loss, chuck it, use it in the garden or something.
