Well, we never know where the wood and rock we buy comes from, or what it may have been exposed to, notwithstanding we assume it is safe from a fish store, but it is not the store's fault as they also don't know the origins. I had an issue with a chunk of wood years ago, killing fish.

I would put it in a pail/container of water if you can and just let it sit for days. Change the water periodically (every couple of days). It may be something that dissipates on its own. Of course, if you don't particularly mind the loss, chuck it, use it in the garden or something.

The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. [unknown source]

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
