so I just set up a tank, and it has nothing but gravel and plants. The plants are java fern, wisteria, an amazon swords. Turns out I won't be able to get my filter as soon as I thought. So that means it can't cycle right? And then the plant will die? How long can they stay in there with no fish and no filter?

Should I add root tabs? Also it doesn't even have lighting yet! (except I placed it next to a window to help maybe)

Well I think if you do 25% water changes every other day the plants should be fine. I'm not a plant expert, but I would think root tabs may blow the tanks reading through the roof. If you have other tanks with gravel, put in approximately 1 cup from a cycled tank and what ever goo comes with it. This should get the cycle going while seeding with at least some bacteria. If you have an air pump you ca get some circulation, not matter how little water movement it is better than none at all. You never said how big the tank is so it is hard to advise.

(it is also in my signature as well).
the peat moss in the substrate is to prevent a very slow increase of kh and gh (hardness)

wait a week and add a single male platy and ton' add food for a week.

the and 2 female platties and start feeding a single flake per day.

In 6 months you will have a tank full of platties.

(no water changes, no filters, no air stone, just replace evaporation with water top offs)
