Floating java, anubias?

Is it possible to leave Java fern and anubias nana as floating plants?

Also I got them from pet smart and they came in the pots. was I supposed to pull them out of the pots and peel all that stuff from the roots?

You should remove both of them from the pots, as both plants get nutrients from the water column through their roots, not through the substrate (although I have had luck burring most of the roots in the substrate just not the rhizome of my anubias). Most often these plants are tied to rocks or drift wood so their roots are in the water column.

As from experience Java ferns can stay floating but they wont do as well, and their roots become extremely long. No experience floating anubias but seeing as these are both low light plants I would try and tie them off to something on the bottom so they don't get as much light.
