After reading a Basic Approach to the Natural Planted Aquarium—Part Three

I am confused about my filter. It seems to be saying yes use one but only to clean the water.

So should I put the spray bar below the water level so as not to cause surface disturbance and loose valuable Co2?

CO2 will always be produced from your inhabitants and live plants if you have them ( produce CO2 when no light). Personally i would go for the spray bar t be positioned just above the water surface to allow for better gas exchange, altho you dont like the idea of losing CO2 to much is a problem. On my setup i run 2 cannister filters with both having a vertical and horizontal spray bar. On one side the vertical bar is situated near the from of the tank and the horizontal feeding it and on the other side i have the vertical at the back and the horizontal connected to it. This allows a full circulation of water and good gas exchange. My live plants and fish are all doing well altho recently someone in there has taken to destroying the plants. The choice is your what you want to do, how to's are there to guide you and arent a solid set of rules

I think what they are saying is that it is the plants which maintain the tank not the filter. Hence to use one just to make the water clearer.

but then what do I know? I don't use filters.
