Fertilsing plants, not algae

My 10 gallon tank is pretty heavily planted with 4 java ferns, 4 stems of scarlet ludwigia and 6 stems of wisteria. 2 ten watt flourescents are on ten hours a day. The plants grow quite well but seem a little pale in color so I was thinking maybe an iron deficiency. I'm worried about fertilising because I also get quite a bit of dark, soft green algae between biweekly 25% water changes. Is there a way to just get fertiliser to the plant roots and not so much in the water column?

You could try root tabs. I know API makes ones that work well and are readily available. I'm not sure of their iron content, though, or if that could be part of your problem.

i suggest another 10watts or so on your lights and cutting them down to 7-8 hours a day instead of 10. also once your plants get going nicely they should out-compete the algae for nutrients.

Try DIY co2, Once I put that in my 10G the plants perked up and I haven't seen algae since.
