fertilizers?

How do I know if I need fertilizers for my planted tank?

Also:

I got the Oxygen Plus Biofilter 7 for my 50 gallon tank. But it doesn't come with an extended tube like I thought it would for some reason. Is this still a good sponge filter? In one of my other threads someone mentioned the extended tube that can make steam rather then bubbles. I"m wondering if I should exchange it for #4 which appears to have the extended tube that I assume makes the "steam"?

Well if you have plants in your tank then you need fertilizer as well. They might do fine for a little bit without any but sooner or later they will need it. Best to fertilize from day one with plants.

+1 on the flourish. I use it once a week myself.

As for the filter I used to add longer tubes, now I don't. Frankly I don't see too much of a difference performance-wise.
