A month or so ago I got some Dwarf Baby Tears (Hemianthus Callitrichoides) shipped to me. When they came in I didn't have time to plant them right away so I left them in their pots in the aquarium overnight and meant to plant them the next day. Well, in the night a bunch of the MTS took every leaf off the fragile baby stems.
At the time I was trying to do a sort of eco system tank so I just left the leaves floating to decay and add their nutrients back into the water. Instead of decaying though, they grew new roots and budded new leaves and have become a floating plant.
Has anyone ever had this happen? If so, will they start to stem on their own or do I need to anchor them somehow to get them planted?
I have been there for a few months now..since I have a complete invert tank with nerite snails and MTS it is my opinion a losing battle if you keep snails in a planted aquarium with fine stems like DBT. Mine is currently floating along with my microsword. (and will remain there..unless it finds its way to the ground).
I have found it doesn't need to be planted to live. My aquarium was all perfect but the snails were basically doing donuts on my lawn..lol..Now there are a couple pieces of DBT that got caught near the root of my giant hair grass and they look to be attached..but I don't expect it to ever stay there as long as I have snails. With MTS they are in and out of the substrate constantly so they will always be overturning or releasing your fine plants attachment to the ground. You could try netting them down but I am pretty sure you would have the same prob..i guess it depends..I was working on making a DBT foreground carpet..
I have mine int he same tank as planted & floating (RCS tank with Killi fish and MTS). both versions grow great just that the planted version appears thicker & shorter and the floated version more like skinnier longer stems. But apart from that all is good
yeah come to think of it my floating DBT is stretching out too..I thought it seemed that way but just thought I was imagining it..but since you have noticed the same I guess it is.
Coolness...good to know. Looks like in the mean time I'll need to move them to a different tank though...what started out as a a corner filled with them is new covering about 1/4 of the water surface. I'm not sure if they're multiplying or just growing out.
