my friend went to a local river and found a piece of drift wood perfect for his tank. he boiled it for several hours to get all of the insects and other things he wanted off of it. then he let it soak to get the extra color out of it so it wouldnt cloud or dye his tank water. than he boiled it once again. the whole process took about a week and a half. it looks great in his tank. add wieght to the driftwood to keep it in place

Its much better to get wood that isn't near water. Ideally it should be some type of hardwood. If used lots of small branches from the woods around my house. I don't even bother debarking or boiling them. I always look for dead weathered branches that are still attached to the trees. They do eventually break down, but smaller pieces do take at least a year. The denser the wood the longer it will take which is why you want hardwoods.

Driftwood lowers the ph. so if you have fish/plants that like high ph, driftwood is a bad idea.
