So recently all of my swords have started dieing. I have only had them for a few weeks, but until now they have been fine. I would ever go as far to say thriving. With new leaves comming up every few days. About a week ago i got some root tabs. And that is when their health started to decline. Now i have a rotting leaf per day. I have iron rich ferts, and iron rich tabs. I dont know what is happening. Also about three days ago i put an air bubbler in. As i thought the power would be off the next day and wanted as much oxygen in the water as possible. But the power stayed on. Soooooo. Help?:(

I hear adding bubbles to a planted tank removes CO2 from the water ,and maybe this caused it? If you think you might loose power there really isen't much you can do. A friend told me that she "sturs" her tank with a large wooden spoon if power is lost for over a hour. Not so shure about that method so I normaly leave them alone ,and that seems to work for me.

A bubbler isn't going to kill your plants overnight, if ever at all. Post a picture maybe - the thing with swords is that when you buy them from the store, they have terrestrial leaves because the plants are mass grown in emersed conditions, as opposed to immersed underwater. So, once you put them in the tank, the plant switches from above water to under water mode, and sheds its emersed leaf growth and replaces them with new immersed growth. So, that might be what's happening.

im not sure. When i got it from petco it said bleheri.. Or something of the sorts.. I think it is an amazon sword. As it is tall and has small circular leaves in the stems. The stems also get red under the right conditions.

How many weeks have you had these plants? It could be the that it is just emersed leaves dying as has been mentioned. You said you have seen new growth have you noticed the new leaves dieing? What type of root types are they? Can you give a name? Do you add any other types of fertilizers if so what?

I don't think any new leaves are dieing. But it is hard to tell because there are a lot of somewhat tangled leaves. The root tabs i use are api root tabs with extra iron. And the ferts i use are nitrafin plant grow. This basically the only thing my lfs carries plant wise.

My thoughts on this is that its not emersed leaves dieing. I think in this case the problem is your root tablets. Too much iron can be a bad thing and cause other issue for your plants which is what I believe is what you are seeing now. Just my thoughts on this but wait for others who have more experience on the matter as they can give a better answer then I.

I tend to agree. It is true that the existing leaves on a sword will often yellow and die off during the first couple of months, as another member explained. But if these are leaves that have appeared since you got the plant, there is a nutrient issue. The latter could still be relevant even with the original leaves too, just to be clear.

The API root tabs have caused problems for other members, I would not use them. I believe they can also be very messy, so try not to disturb what are already in the substrate.

What exactly do the dying leaves look like? Can you perhaps post a photo when you can log in from your PC? It would help to see the issue.

What is the light over the tank? Be specific--type, number of tubes/bulbs, wattage and kelvin. And the tank size (length and gallons).

The bubbler should not be necessary, unless the tank is way overstocked there will not be a shortage of oxygen, and while it is true that this can drive off much-needed CO2 i agree this is not likely to be so fast. Though this could be one of several factors contributing.

oh wow.0the tank is a 20 gallon long. It is 30 inches long, 31 centimeters wide, and about 12 1/2 inches deep. I have two cfl's at about 15 watts each.( i know its crappy lighting but i cant afford any better at this time.) i dont know the kelvin. I leave the lights on for about 11 hours a day. I probably need to lower that. But it has beel that way since i bought the plants. And the leves on the first day look like the tip is going limp. By the second day the entire stem is gone. Urggggg. There are currently two leaves going limp. ( and i did disturb a root tab. On accident it clouded the water for an entire day.)

Yes, that's what i meant about the API tab.;-) Yur light is not bad, two 15w CFL bulbs should be sufficient. What is their Kelvin rating? For instance, daylight bulbs are 6500K which is cool white, while warmer light is around 5000K. Plants tend to do better with 6500K.

How often are you using the liquid Plant-Gro?

Is there any chance of a photo?:)
