Ok I'm not really sure what this plant is called but all it does is grow really super fast. It grows up like looking like a rope with leaves all around it. I was curious to know if I can just cut off the top part of the plant and take the pruned parts and bunch them up and plants them elsewhere in the tank and watch them grow too.

Is this possible?

i dont blame you for not knowing what plant is what 'cause i have trouble identifying them too, so i know your pain  anyways, what type of lighting you got? that can cause plants to grow like crazy. i switched to flourescent some time ago and my plants grow out of the tank like crazy. regular harvests are great every now and again. but the ones you replant will outgrow the tank as well. a good idea is to sell them, make some $.

Any pictures of your plant?:) Pictures will save you the trouble from describing the plant.

There is very little chance of stopping Elodea even in lower light tanks. This stuff grows like a weed and is classified as one in many states. You can cut it anywhere you want and replant and it will grow back thicker. There are not many plants in the hobby that you can't simply cut and rpelant and have them grow. I have yet to find a stem plant that will grow in my tanks that won't take off from cuttings. If you find it doesn't really like to be immediately replanted, let it float for about a week until you see roots and then it will take readily to being planted.

Dude you totally nailed it, it is Egeria densa. So I shall snip it and replant it. Does it matter if I leave rubber bands in the tank to rap them up? It's not going to throw off some chemical balance is it?

Any who thanks for the great information guys.

No, it will not affect the chemicals, but I would recommend not leaving the rubber bands in the tank as they will deteriorate and fall apart. The last thing you need is for the rubber bands pieces causing problems with your fish.

Egeria densa is also called Elodea or Anacharis. Generally in fish stores it is sold as Anacharis. It grows like CRAZY! I'm from San Diego and its actually illegal to dump it there because it is chocking out the SD river. However, it is an excellent plant in aquariums due to its easiness to grow and its ammount of leafy area (allowing more oxygenation and nitrate consumption). I used to prune mine all the time and rebunch it...works great. It will grow freefloating as well. I use to actually staple peices of it to driftwood to keep it anchored.

im not sure what type of fish you have so this may not apply to you but i have the same problem with my water lillies. my algea eaters and crab do a wonderful job of pruneing them. i dont put algea wafers in for a couple of days and they eat my plants. at first this used to get me sooo mad but now its needed!
