Can I plant my aquarium?

I have a 55 gallon community aquarium with a dwarf gourami, quite a few fancy guppies and zebra danios. For the substrate i have regular colored aquarium gravel from petsmart. The gravel is about 1-2 inches deep depending on the spot. Could I put any type of plants in there? What kinds of plants would work?

what kind of light do you have over the tank? if its the one that came with it, you could switch out the bulb to a 6500K full spectrum and get away with some low light plants. java moss and anachris are 2 easy to maintain lower light plants.

You would need a bit more substrate (gravel) for plants like swords which have extensive root systems; I am a great fan of this genus because htey are very hardy, grow moderately fast, and stay as planted without regular trimming/pruning. And they are low to moderate light. Stem plants (most but not all need more light), crypts, Vallisneria, Sagittaria would probably work with your present substrate depth where it is 2 inches. We do need to know the light though. How many tubes, is it/are they full length (48-inches), and what type and wattage (this is printed on one end of the tube)?

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business.
