Can I attach java fern to my filter?

I have this type of filter:

As of now, I have no rocks, driftwood, or anything but live plants in my tank. I've bought some java fern and attached it using string, to the plastic tube that runs to the bottom of the tank, seen above. I have the plant facing me, imagine the fern's roots facing the back of the filter, and the plant would be coming at you, if you're looking at the above model. Sorry if that's confusing.

With this, I'm trying to make a really unique setup that I think could look really nice. The problem is, will it work? I have some of the roots wrapped a bit with the string, others are near by. I have no problem with the string there, but either way, will the roots attach and let the plant grow out? Am I out of my mind?

My concern would be that the roots would find their way into the strainer part of the intake tube and impede the flow of water into the filter and may clog it up. I guess if you were to keep an eye on it and be sure to keep that area clear of roots it may work. Not sure how well Java Fern does in high current areas. Kind of a neat concept though.

75 Gallon - Odd couple (Polleni/Angelfish)
55 Gallon - African tank
20 Gallon Long - QT
10 Gallon - Empty

In my expierience, the plant will not readily attach to smooth plastic surface as readily as it will to wood or rock.
Another consideration would be filter maint. Sometimes the lift tube needs cleaned out and this is best done by removing it from the filter.

The most important medication in your fish medicine cabinet is.. Clean water.

Lol, yeah. It was more of a spur of the moment kind of thing while trying to find something better.

I would attach the Java Fern to a largish chunk of wood or rock, and place that in front of the filter. This is actually suggested in our profile of this plant, because JF does quite well with stronger water flows, unlike some plants. This also works to "soften" the flow for the fish, another benefit depending what they are.

I actually have a medium size Java Fern attached to the intake right now. It was just a small one that let loose and was floating about on it's own. Obviously, it got sucked onto the intake and stayed there. I always thought I would remove it as soon as it became an issue but it hasn't. Every so often I rip a bit of the roots off just to keep at least one side clear and so far so good. The downside is that I think it gets too much light there and would do better nearer the bottom of the tank but... so far, it is alright there.
