i bought a marimo or "moss ball" the other day, it looks really neat. my fish like to play with it. what is it really? is it moss or algae? what do i do with it? how fast does it grow? my loaches are constantly sitting on top of it and rolling it around... they look like circus performers...hahaha.

Nope, not algae. I've seen those balls in people's planted tanks before but never seen them personally. They are classified as plants I'm sure. If I have them, my loaches might just enjoy rolling them.8)

dismall got it, they are algae. A dark green form of algae that prefers to cohere to itself instead of spread out everywhere. They can actually be tough to keep in good condition if they sit in one spot too long as the entire ball needs to get plenty of light. This shouldn't be a problem from what you said though with your loaches using it to do circus tricks.

Once they get too big you can take them and break them into smaller balls just make sure they are round enough to roll around.
