Bala Sharks & Tiger Barbs

I am setting up a new tank. I will be keeping Bala Sharks and probably Tiger Barbs and Odessa Barbs.

How bad are these fish for eating plants? The Bala Sharks are currently only a couple of inches long, slightly larger than Serpae Tetras but smaller than Mollies. It was recently suggested to me that it will probably be at least a couple of years before the Balas get so large as to wreak havoc on plants.

ok so I have had a look around and it seems there are mixed views and experiences with keeping them together and a bit of feedback on the plant eating

Bala shark will kill and eat smaller fish, as it mentions in our profile, and at a mature size of 14-16 inches, this would easily include Tiger Barb. The fish in the video of course may have been weakened and could have died from other causes. But as these fish grow, expect it. If you haven't already, you should read our profile, click the shaded name.

I've never kep these fish in planted tanks, so I can't offer any coments on how voraciously they eat plants.

Byron.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If youíre going to take it under your wing then youíre responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
