Attaching java ferns

I just got a few java ferns and since i have no thread or fishing wire i just used the lead band things to hold them down. Is that good enough as long as they stay in place?

Also, how long do they take to attach and how fast do they grow?

While it may be argued as to how fast it will occur, the lead will leech into the aquarium. Lead is a toxic metal, so I would remove the lead band.

I usually wedge part of the rhizome into a crevice in the rock or wood. If you need something else, ordinary thread or even string will work, provided it is not coated string but plain cotton. Once the rhizome is attached (this takes a few weeks probably, I've never checked it) the string could be cut off.

Something we all need to remember: The fish you've acquired was quite happy not being owned by you, minding its own business. If you’re going to take it under your wing then you’re responsible for it. Every aspect of its life is under your control, from water quality and temperature to swimming space. [Nathan Hill in PFK]
