I have a stalk like thing growing from my amazon sword and i dont know what im supposed to do with it.. Its about a foot long and has reached the surface. Do i cut it off? Leave it? I really have no idea. Posted via Mobile Device
I have same on my sword at the moment. Its a flower stem. I did make a gap in the lid so that it could continue to grow up but it still hasn't flowered yet. Chop it off if you don't want it.
This is explained a bit in our profile of Echinodorus bleherae (the "common" sword) as this species can be very prolific. It is an inflorescence or flower stalk, but grown submersed it is unlikely you will see flowers. But adventitious plants (plantlets or daughter plants) will grow from the nodes or "buds" along the inflorescence. When they develop several leaves and some roots (white) you can gently pull them off (pull downward along the stem) and plant them in the substrate. If you leave them on the inflorescence, they will continue to develop and can get quite large, but I find they attract brush algae more, probably from being closer to the light.
Sik80, even allowing the inflorescence to grow above the surface and through the cover will not result in flowers, at least never has for me. Most authors agree that the plant needs to be grown emersed to obtain flowers. My Echinodorus major did flower, and apparently this is very rare submersed; it also has adventitious plants from two of the nodes that flowered.
There is more info on the bog-like growing pattern of swords in the profile.
