Yea the normal sponge filters is what I use. Air Pumps loud??? What kinda Air pump are you using? I have the small one's that are 1 watt or less for the 10g's set ups and the only sound I hear is the slight 'bubbling' in the tanks but not the air pumps

i just got a new whisper 100, so i have one big air pump running everything. its a LITTLE noisey, but i keep it under my 55 in the cabinet, and considering it replaced 4 small air pumps, its one hell of a trade off! I love it :)

I use an Elite 799 for my 10 gallon and i have to muffle the sound with a big blanket and i can still hear it vibrating. do you get yours from fish stores or somewhere else?
